Papasay Aggregate Quarry

Papasay Aggregate Quarry

Papasay has an aggregate quarry permit approximately 3km north of the reserve land. This permit was a result of significant work and negotiations with the Ministry of Transportation. In 2020, BNA completed a crushing contract with Teranorth and Gilbertson to crush 22,600 tonnes of Granular A and 10,000 tonnes of Granular B2. The community pays 50 cents/tonne to the crown every year for aggregates moved from the quarry. A price list has been developed for the sale of this material.

Aggregate pits and quarries are vital to BNA’s development. Firstly, it can be used by the community for on-reserve developments, as it would no longer require the purchase of this material from a 3rd party. Secondly, it can be sold to 3rd parties for the regional projects and development that are occurring all around the First Nation’s reserve land.

Currently, an Aggregate Study is being completed with our partners at TBT Engineering to see what the lifespan is for this Aggrege Source. New sources will need to be found both on and off-reserve to ensure BNA has what it needs to develop its community and derive a revenue stream from this material.
