Papasay Sawmill (PVAWP)

Papasay Value-Added Wood Products (PVAWP - Sawmill)

The Papasay Sawmill is the main economic anchor for BNA. It has been operating since 2017, producing green lumber with portable Woodmizer saws. Art Gladu is the Sawmill Manager and has been running the operation since it began. Currently, there are 3 Sawmill Workers in the facility, and we are looking forward to expanding the operation over the next few months.

BNA has been successful in receiving federal support for the expansion of the Sawmill. We have purchased our new “Baker” Sawline, which has the capability of quadrupling our production at the Sawmill. We are also setting up the kiln chamber for wood drying, and the planer/moulder to complete the value-added line. We are also in the process of completing our Marketing Study for the new expansion, which will ensure that we proceed with the customers that will provide the Sawmill with the necessary stability in sales to ensure its sustainability going forward.

The Papasay Sawmill is more than a Sawmill. It is the key to BNA’s development through the creation of an internal economy. This will allow members to return to the land with a job. Lumber that is cut will be utilized for the building of BNA’s homes on the land and all wood waste from our operation will be chipped and utilized in our biomass system – both for the Sawmill, and eventually for the community through its district biomass system.
